Mexico is known for its spicy food with pure flavours. This is partly because there are about 300 sorts of peppers in Mexico and Mexicans use the most ingredients pure as they are. The most used ingredients are corn, tomatoes, beans, potatoes, and chocolate. Meat, which is usually beef, is often used in meals as well. Chicken however, is not used as much as in Europe.
One of the best known dishes of Mexico is Chili con Carne; this dish contains meat, beans and a lot of chillies. Another key dish is tortilla; this is a kind of pancake made of corn which can be served with tomatoes and/or potatoes. This dish is also sold as street food under the name of a ‘tamale’. Guacamole, which is a mix of avocado, lemon, tomato, red pepper, salt and garlic, is often served as a dish on the side. It is common to serve some nachos with it; these are a kind of chips made from corn or wheat. The usual drinks in Mexico are also known in Europe; the national drink is tequila. Tequila is mostly drunk as a shot with lemon and salt. When the salt is replaced by Cointreau or Triple Sec., the drink turns into a margarita, which is a popular cocktail all around the world. Next to those two drinks there are also a lot of fine wines in Mexico, which can be a safe choice for someone who is not used to high-percentage alcohol, because wine contains a remarkably lower level of alcohol. An after dinner drink which is common is a coffee liqueur called Kahlúa. Next to all the big meals and heavy drinks, Mexico also has a lot of fresh fruits to offer. It is worth a try because there are many special and uncommon kinds of fruit. These fruits are not just delicious; they also offer another advantage: Because of the altitude in Mexico, the effect of alcohol can be worse than usual and by eating fruits this can be a little bit prevented.
